SSC examinee girl saved from child marriage

SSC examinee girl saved from child marriage
When girls of her age were taking preparation for their secondary school certificate examinations, the 16-year old girl was looking for some sort of escape from her impending wedding ceremony.

The girl, resident of Moulvibazar's Kulaura upazila, eventually was saved from becoming a victim of child marriage with the help of Human Rights Commission and the local administration.
The girl's parents wanted to marry off their daughter to a Dubai expatriate Bangladeshi man on 10 February.
On Sunday, Human Rights Commission Kulaura office general secretary Tapan Dutta and organising secretary Nayan Lal Dev went to the girl's home after they learned about it.
Tapan Dutta said, " We got to know from the girl that she did not want to get married. She wanted to continue her studies instead."
"We tried to make her parents aware of the negative sides of child marriage. However, they did not want to stop the wedding. Then we had to call up the women-issues related officer," he added.
Upazila women-issues related officer Selina Yasmin said the girl's father agreed to stop the marriage after he was told that stern legal action will be taken otherwise.
The girl's father told Prothom Alo over the phone that now he realised that it would have been a great mistake if he had married off his daughter before her 18 years of age.
